Hans Knöpfli was born in Winterthur (Switzerland) in 1927.

He lived in Cameroon from 1956 to 1993 where he worked both as pastor and craftsman.

He received an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Yaoundé (Cameroon) on 21st October 2005 for the part he has played in the struggle against poverty in Cameroon.

With strong support from leading Fons and Chiefs he established the Presbyterian Handicraft Centres in Bafut, Bali-Nyonga and Bamessing (known as Prescraft) with the aim of preventing the disappearance of indigenous arts and crafts and of reducing unemployment among school-leavers.
